|Info||Klaus Wowereit was born in Berlin on 1 October 1953. After passing his Abitur (university entrance examination) in 1973, he studied law at the Freie Universität Berlin. In 1979 he passed his first state examination, and in 1981 he received his degree upon passing his second state examination. From 1981 to 1984 he was a Higher Executive Officer at the Senate Department for the Interior; from 1984 to 1995 he served as district councilor for Berlin-Tempelhof. |
He is a member of the SPD party executive at the state level and a delegate to the party convention at the district and state level. From 1979 to 1984 he was one of the members of the district assembly in Tempelhof; in 1981 he became the floor leader of the SPD in Tempelhof. From 1995 to 1999 he was the deputy floor leader of the SPD in the Berlin House of Representatives and then served as floor leader from December 1999 to June 2001.
Mr. Wowereit is a member of the Workers’ Welfare Association (AWO), the Tempelhof Association for Art and Culture (Tempelhofer Kunst- und Kulturverein), the Tempelhof Partnership Association (Partnerschaftsverein Tempelhof), the Home, Apartment, and Property Owners Association in Berlin-Lichtenrade (Haus-, Wohnungs- und Grundstückseigentümerverein Berlin-Lichtenrade), the Friends and Patrons of the Bruno-H.-Bürgel School (Förderverein Bruno-H.-Bürgel Schule), as well as the European Academy.
Mr. Wowereit has been Governing Mayor of Berlin since 16 June 2001.
Mr. Wowereit served as President of the Bundesrat from 1 November 2001 until 31 October 2002.
