InfoCharles C. Foti, Jr. was sworn in on January 12, 2004 as Louisiana’s Attorney General, after serving for 30 years as one of the most innovative law enforcement officials in the United States, Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff. Prior to that position, he served for several years as an attorney for several local, state and federal agencies. Throughout his career, Attorney General Foti has remained committed to public service and, most importantly, he remains committed to the people he serves.

In his tenure as Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff, he oversaw the enormous expansion of the parish jail, growing from 800 prisoners in 1973 to more than 7,000 currently. As the prison expanded, so did the need for education and rehabilitation skills for prisoners. Sheriff Foti started the first reading and GED programs, work release programs, drug treatment programs and the nation’s first boot camp at the local level, all to prepare prisoners for a future without crime. Administratively, Sheriff Foti managed a multi-million dollar budget and a complex organization of more than 1,400 employees.

Sheriff Foti has for many years been an advocate for the elderly. As Sheriff, he and a small army of volunteers provided Thanksgiving meals for senior citizens in the New Orleans area who were alone or couldn’t afford a proper holiday feast. He started a back to work program for senior citizens that helps people over the age of 55 get back into the workforce and feel useful again.

As Attorney General, Mr. Foti plans to continue many of the innovative and award-winning programs he started during his years as Sheriff of Orleans Parish. But he is also looking towards the future. He plans to be a powerful consumer advocate and take action against companies and individuals who would intentionally defraud Louisianans, particularly the elderly and the working poor. He seeks to build upon an already effective staff which investigates and prosecutes elderly abuse incidents in our state’s health care facilities. Attorney General Foti refuses to tolerate elderly abuse and any attempts to defraud seniors financially.

The Attorney General wants to keep ahead of the curve on high tech computer crimes. With more and more people turning to the Internet to shop and pay bills, the Internet has become one of the most effective ways for criminals to commit such crimes as identity theft. Other computer crimes include possession and distribution of child pornography. Internet chat rooms are havens for pedophiles, but with the eyes of AG investigators and prosecutors always looking, criminals shouldn’t consider the Internet a “safe” haven.

Protecting children from potential violence in their schools is another top priority of this administration. Having been Criminal Sheriff in Orleans Parish for 30 years, Attorney General Foti has seen firsthand some of the dire security issues that our schools are facing. He plans to take the current ‘Safe Schools Initiative’ to every parish in the state.

Attorney General Charles Foti received his undergraduate degree from the University of New Orleans and graduated from Loyola University Law School in 1965. He is also a graduate of Warren Easton High School in New Orleans. Foti served his country in the United States army from 1955 through 1958.
