Info | Since his election in 1994, Bob Barr has served the people of Georgia's Seventh District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bob is an Assistant Majority Whip, and serves on three important committees: Judiciary, Financial Services, and Government Reform. He is Chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administration Law, and Vice Chairman of the full Government Reform Committee. Bob served as a member of the Speaker?s Bipartisan Working Group on Youth Violence; and is a member of the Republican Study Committee, the Pro-Life Caucus, the National Guard and Reserve Caucus, and the Congressional Chapter of the Civil Air Patrol.
Bob has fought aggressively for individual freedom, personal privacy, regulatory reform, tax relief, a strong national defense, and a balanced federal budget. He authored the Defense of Marriage Act, signed into law in 1996. In 1997, he guided the historic tri-state water compact to enactment; and in 1998 led the successful effort to rename Washington National Airport in honor of President Ronald Reagan. He has worked consistently to make government officials accountable to the people and our Constitution. Bob's continued leadership in the war against mind-altering drugs is evidenced by his service as a Member of the Speaker's Task Force for a Drug-Free America.
Bob is a Life Member of the National Rifle Association and serves on its Board of Directors. He also is a member of the Federalist Society Advisory Board, Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He has received awards from many grassroots organizations, including the Christian Coalition, the American Shooting Sports Council, the Conservative Political Action Committee, and the Law Enforcement Alliance of America.
Bob has been recognized as one of the top legislators in the House and Senate by Congressional Quarterly magazine, as one of the Most Powerful and Influential Georgians by Georgia Trend, and one of the most influential Georgians by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Time magazine has called Bob "Georgia?s state of the art conservative." His prior public service included serving as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, with the CIA, and as President of Southeastern Legal Foundation.
Bob is married to the former Jeri Dobbin, they have four children and six grandchildren, and live in Cherokee County.
