Info | Andrew Dickson White graduated from Yale University in 1853, and spent the next two years in Europe, including six months as an attache in the U.S. Embassy in St. Petersburg. Following a further year of studies in history at Yale, he became professor of history and English literature at the University of Michigan. In 1867, he became the first president of Cornell University, and held that post for nearly twenty years, contributing generously to the university from his own funds. The school of history and political science at Cornell was named after him. He served as Minister to Germany, and then was appointed Minister to Russia under President Benjamin Harrison, continuing into the term of President Grover Cleveland. During his time as Minister, Russia opened a pavillion at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893.
