InfoWEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Mayor Dennis J. Nordfelt was born on March 2, 1943 in Salina, Utah. He is married to the former Glenda Carlson and they have nine children – two daughters and seven sons – and twenty-one grandchildren.

Mayor Nordfelt’s family moved to Moab, Utah when he was eleven and he claims Moab as his hometown. He started his political career at Grand County High School where he served as Student Body President. He was also active in athletics, lettering in four different sports. He was honored as the Outstanding All-Around Male Student of his graduating class.

Mayor Nordfelt is a 1977 graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy. In addition, he has attended Southern Utah, Weber and Brigham Young universities.

He joined the Utah Highway Patrol as a trooper in May of 1967. During the next fourteen years, he progressed through the ranks of the Patrol and was appointed as Superintendent by Governor Scott Matheson in August of 1981. He was reappointed by Governor Norm Bangerter in 1985 and, after twenty years of service to the State of Utah, he retired from the Highway Patrol on May 1, 1987. Mayor Nordfelt became Chief of the West Valley City Police Department on July 1, 1987 and retired from that position on August 28, 1998 to become the Olympic Coordinator for West Valley City, where he served until May 1st, 2002.

Mayor Nordfelt was appointed to succeed Mayor Gearld Wright in August of 2002, and was elected to the mayor’s office in the November election, 2003.

Mayor Nordfelt has been very active in civic and professional organizations. He served as a member of the State Board of Directors of the Utah Youth Soccer Association, as a Junior Jazz coach, and a two-year term on the Board of Trustees of the Pioneer Valley Hospital. He was a member of the Governor’s Commission on Drinking and Driving, the State Domestic Violence Intervention Task Force, the Utah Sentencing Commission, The Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, and the Board of Directors for the Utah Safety Council. He served terms as president of both the Utah Peace Officers Association and the Utah Chiefs of Police Association. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Salt Lake County Council of Mayors and the Transportation Subcommittee of the Wasatch Front Regional Council. In addition, he is a member of the Utah League of Cities and Towns Legislative Policy Committee.

Mayor Nordfelt is also active in his church. He has served as an L.D.S. Bishop on three occasions and as a Stake President for nine years. He currently serves as first counselor in the presidency of the Utah Salt Lake City Mission.

When he has a spare minute, Mayor Nordfelt enjoys reading, fly fishing, golf, river rafting, and other outdoor activities with his family.
