InfoStephanie Sanchez is a dedicated public servant with extensive experience in both government and the private sector. A lifelong Connecticut resident, she has long fought for issues important to the voters of Fairfield County. In the 2000 election, Sanchez garnered an unprecedented 42% of the vote against an entrenched incumbent. In addition, she was the youngest woman actively running for national office in that election, which makes her success even more noteworthy. Ms. Sanchez's principal issues in the congressional campaign of 2002 - education, the environment and the economy - are areas in which she has extensive experience, in both government service and the private sector. Her experience substitute teaching in every public school in Greenwich has allowed her to develop a thorough knowledge of the needs of the public school system. She has developed a strong understanding of environmental issues through a fellowship with the League of Conservation Voters in Washington, DC, and work on Superfund legislation and Brownfield remediation with the National League of Cities' Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee. In Greenwich, she was vice-chair of the Representative Town Meeting Transportation Committee, initiating and leading the Transportation Task Force as well as serving on the Town's Conservation Commission and Recycling Advisory Board. She was most recently employed by Save the Sound, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the restoration, protection, and preservation of Long Island Sound, as their grants coordinator.

Raised in Greenwich, CT, Stephanie graduated from Greenwich Country Day School in 1982, and Phillips Andover Academy in 1985. She then spent her freshman year of college abroad at Cambridge University in England and returned to finish her academic career at Brown University. Following graduation in 1989, she immediately made a choice to pursue a career in public service. That career has included posts in government and in the private sector, but has always focused on finding an outlet for her idealism and unbridled optimism for making a difference in government.

Inspired by a job on Capitol Hill after college, Sanchez returned to Connecticut where she was elected to the Representative Town Meeting in Greenwich, where once again, she was the youngest woman at age 24. Six years later, Stephanie shook the Republican establishment in Greenwich by almost winning the race for First Selectman (Mayor). Because of that close election she and her running mate won control of the town's Executive Board serving as selectmen (deputy mayors). In that capacity, she distinguished herself by helping to successfully reorganize the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Police and Fire Departments.

In addition to her duties in Greenwich, she has served as Government Director and Legislative Specialist for the League of Women Voters of Connecticut and was the first woman President of the Greenwich Jaycees. Her private sector work includes being the Executive Director of the Brown University Club in New York City where she also handled other clients with Sumner, Rider and Associates (a New York-based public relations firm). Pursuing her desire to work with young people in the community, she served as Director of Diversity Programs at Greenwich Country Day School as well as coaching their varsity girls' basketball team to two league championships.

Since the Congressional campaign of 2000, Stephanie has worked to expand her experiences in both the domestic and foreign arenas. Last spring, she was chosen as one of six rising political figures from across the United States to serve as a delegate to China during a two-week political study program. Sponsored by the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL), a bi-partisan non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C., Stephanie was given the opportunity to travel the Chinese countryside and interact with rising local, municipal and national leaders in Chinese government, business and civic groups.

In addition to her experience in China, Stephanie served as a volunteer in Armenia with the International Executive Service Corps. IESC sent Ms. Sanchez to Armenia to help train new non-governmental organizations (NGO) on how to effectively advocate their programs. Specifically, she helped build relationships and coalitions between NGO representatives and local and regional government officials. Her efforts focused on specific areas of concern, most notably business development, irrigation, water quality, orphaned children and the establishment of an information center.

Currently a resident of Stamford, Stephanie is motivated to improve the quality of life in her district in terms of traffic congestion, environmental concerns, lack of affordable housing as well as the concerns of our children and our elderly. Her concern for Bridgeport is always paramount in her mind, which is why she concentrated her attention on cleaning up the old, dirty power plants known as the "Sooty Six" - two located here in the district in Bridgeport and Norwalk. As Co-President of the Greater Norwalk Clean Air Coalition, Stephanie participated in numerous steering committees, providing leadership to the Connecticut Clean Air Coalition's 500,000-member grassroots organization. Aware of the relationship between our transportation congestion in Fairfield County and lack of affordable housing, Stephanie advocated on behalf of the Fairfield Community Foundation's Women and Girls Fund to help solve this critical issue.

Stephanie is committed to getting young people involved in public service. As a role model to young people thinking of running for office, Stephanie is also helping to launch a statewide organization - the Young Democrats of Connecticut- as Co-President. "Future generations are what this campaign is really about, and their involvement in our Democracy is crucial. We need to have participation by all of us, not just the few of us. At the end of the day, the government is not about 'us' and 'them'; it's about all of us." She is dedicated to fostering a new sense of community spirit by example and through expanding the Democratic process to include new voters and the disenfranchised.

Stephanie also graduated from the Women's Campaign School at Yale University and was recently honored for her dedication as a young woman in public service. She received an award from the Jaycees as an Outstanding Local President and was given a Certificate of Appreciation from the Associated Alumni of Brown University for her distinguished leadership and public service. While at Brown, Stephanie served as captain and coach of the equestrian team and won a national championship at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association finals. She was most recently nominated to the Millennium Edition of Who's Who Of American Women.
