InfoMarc M. Wall, a Senior Foreign Service Officer with rank of Minister Counselor, was sworn in by Secretary of State Colin Powell on June 1 as the new U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Chad. Before assuming this position, he had been Director of the Bureau of African Affairs’ Economic Policy Staff, the office in the Department of State responsible for U.S. economic relations with the nations of Sub-Saharan Africa. He has served in the U.S. Embassies in Cote d’Ivoire and Zimbabwe and worked extensively on African issues in the course of several assignments with the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs and as a special assistant to the Under Secretary for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs.

Marc Wall returned to his work with Africa after several tours dealing with Asia. As Chief of the Economic Office in the U.S. Mission to Taiwan and of the Trade Unit in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, he was directly involved in negotiations that led to China’s and Taiwan’s accessions to the World Trade Organization. As Deputy Director of the Bureau of Asian and Pacific Affairs’ Office of Economic Policy, he was active in the development of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. He has also been a member of the Secretary of State’s Policy Planning Council.
