Info | Born in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, he grew up in Midland, Texas and attended Robert E. Lee High School, the same school attended by first lady Laura Bush. After a brief time at the University of Texas he joined the United States Army and in 1967, as a distinguished graduate of the Artillery Officer Candidate School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he was appointed as an artillery lieutenant and sent to Vietnam.
His injuries in Vietnam earned him three Purple Hearts. That was the start of a long and distinguished career of service to his country that would take him from one world hot spot to another - from the De-Militarized Zone in Korea, to West Germany and a changing Europe, to the Arab desert - always gaining knowledge and experience that would prepare him for the one leadership role that would mark his place in the annals of American history.
Along the way, he attended the University of Texas, Arlington, where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration, graduated from Armed Forces Staff College and the Army War College.
In June 2000, he was promoted to four-star general and assigned as the Commander in Chief, United States Central Command. It's from this role that the world knows him best - as he lead American and Coalition troops in two full-scale campaigns in two years - Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq.
General Franks' awards include: the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (three awards); Distinguished Service Medal (two awards); Legion of Merit (four awards); Bronze Star Medal with "V" (three awards); Purple Heart (three awards); Air Medal with "V"; Army Commendation Medal with "V"; and many foreign-service awards and honors, including appointment as Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE). General Franks was most recently awarded the highest civilian award of the United States of America, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
General Franks has received honorary degrees from University of South, Shippensburg University, Oklahoma State University and Saint Leo University.
Since his retirement from the military, General Franks has joined the ranks of authors with the publication of his autobiography, American Soldier.
He and his wife Cathryn Carley Franks have one daughter, Jacqueline Franks Matlock and make their home in Tampa, Florida.
(President Bush calls the towering Texas general "a down to earth, no-nonsense guy". His granddaughter calls him "Pooh". His military colleagues speak of him as a straight-shooting leader attuned to his soldiers. We call him a true American Hero, please welcome - General Tommy Franks!)
