Dean and professor of law of Univeristy of Utah Law Schoool, received an A.B. degree with distinction from Stanford University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, an M.A. in modern history from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he was a note editor for the law journal. He served as the U. S. Attorney for the District of Utah from 1993 to 1997. Dean Matheson joined the faculty in 1985 and was associate dean for academic affairs from 1990 to 1993. During 1988-89, he served as deputy county attorney for Salt Lake County as part of a faculty exchange program, and during 1989-90, he was visiting associate professor in the Frank Stanton Chair on the First Amendment at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He practiced law as an associate at Williams & Connolly in Washington, D.C. from 1981 to 1985. He managed successful Utah gubernatorial campaigns in 1976 and 1980, and served as a legislative assistant for a U.S. congressman. Professor Matheson has taught courses in civil procedure, constitutional law, evidence, and media law, and has published in the areas of civil procedure and constitutional law.
