Elected to the Montana Senate from the 16th District in 1980. He was re-elected from the 23rd District in 1984 and 1988.
Helena attorney and state senator Joe Mazurek was elected Montana's 18th attorney general in November 1992 and re-elected to a second four-year term in 1996. As attorney general, he serves as both the chief legal officer and the chief law enforcement officer for the state of Montana. He heads the Montana Department of Justice and oversees its 10 divisions, which include the Montana Highway Patrol, the Montana Law Enforcement Academy, the state crime lab, and the Gambling Control Division, as well as the state�s criminal investigative and legal staffs.
Joe�s priorities for the Department of Justice include strong support for local law enforcement.
As attorney general, he has been involved in successful legislative efforts to create a unit to investigate and prosecute workers' compensation, welfare, Food Stamp and Medicaid fraud; to expand the analytical services offered by the crime lab; and to upgrade the Criminal Justice Information Network used by local law enforcement officials. In addition, he has supported legislation to strengthen and protect the rights of crime victims.
Joe is also committed to working with Montana communities on issues involving youth and violence.
In response to a number of troubling incidents involving young Montanans, in 1994 Joe and Superintendent of Public Instruction Nancy Keenan held a series of meetings around the state focusing on youth violence. Following the meetings, Joe formed the Attorney General�s Task Force on Youth Violence. He asked this group to look at statistics on youth violence, to examine the root causes of this violence, and to discuss how Montana�s urban, rural and tribal communities can respond to it. The task force summarized its findings in a report presented to the Attorney General in December 1996, and the Department of Justice continues to undertake activities to assist agencies that work with youth.
During his tenure as attorney general, Joe has been active in the Conference of Western Attorneys General (CWAG) and the National Association of Attorneys General. He served as CWAG chairman in 1996 and is currently a member of the national association�s Executive Committee.
Joe began his public service career in 1980, when he was elected to the first of three consecutive terms as a Montana state senator. During his 12 years in the Senate, he served as a member and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He also sponsored the legislation that established the rights of victims and witnesses of crime. During the 1991 Legislature, his fellow senators chose him to serve a two-year term as Senate President.
A practicing private sector lawyer for more than 17 years, Joe was a partner in the Helena law firm of Gough, Shanahan, Johnson and Waterman before he took office as attorney general.
Joe grew up in Helena and attended public schools there. He graduated from the University of Montana with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 1970. After two years as an Air Defense Artillery officer in the U.S. Army, he returned to Montana and enrolled in the University of Montana Law School. He graduated in 1975.
Joe and his wife, Patty, have three sons -- Tom, Jeff and Dan.
