Chairman, Edison Township Fair Rental Housing Board

Executive Director, Task Force for Measuring Student Achievement

Jun Choi has lived the American dream. He’s been fortunate to live a life full of opportunities. With the life experiences he’s gained and the opportunities given to him, he wants to give back to the residents of Edison Township where he is proud to have grown up.

Jun is Executive Director of a Student Achievement Task Force at the New Jersey Department of Education and is charged with implementing a new and innovative statewide performance monitoring system to ensure that our public school system is effectively and efficiently delivering services to every child. Jun’s passion is improving our public education system. Recognizing that public education opened all kinds of opportunities for him, and became a transforming experience for his life, he is focused on policies that would provide the same opportunities to our children. Before joining the team of Commissioner of Education William Librera, he co-authored the New Jersey Charter School report with the CEO of Citizens for Better Schools, a New Jersey-based advocacy and policy organization. NJ SMART (Standards Measurement and Resource for Teaching), a powerful professional development tool for educators statewide, is the product of the Task Force work. Jun has led the Task Force with the belief that providing a quality and affordable education for every child is the basis for a strong community and society.

Beyond education, his background includes a broad range of experiences in the government, private and non-profit sectors. Prior to his position at the Department of Education, he held positions at the US Office of Management and Budget (White House Budget Office) working on improving the longer-term solvency of our national Social Security system so that every senior can retire with respect. He is familiar with the pressing concerns facing our seniors. He also worked as a management consultant for Ernst & Young LLP advising Fortune 500 companies on business and technology strategy.

In the non-profit sector, Jun co-founded a leadership development and education organization which identifies, trains and mentors talented young adults, encouraging them to enter careers in public service. Since the organization’s inception in 2000, it has impacted the lives of over 1,000 young people. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Metuchen-Edison-Woodbridge, and Chairs the Edison Township Fair Rental Housing Board which regulates the rental rates and protects the interests of thousands of tenants and owners.

A Democrat all his life, Jun has been involved in politics since college, and served on the 2000 Bill Bradley for President campaign in New Jersey, New Hampshire and California. His primary roles were serving as special assistant to the New Hampshire State Director and field coordinator. His experience in politics deepened his sense that too many citizens don’t feel that they can make a difference and improve our collective future. He believes in strengthening the Democratic party by making it more responsive to the issues that affect everyday people. Jun would like to build a stronger sense of community and civic pride by more fully engaging our citizens and improving the discourse of politics.

A Leadership New Jersey (Class of 2003) fellow, Jun graduated from J.P. Stevens High School in Edison, earned his BS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Master’s in Public Policy and Administration from Columbia University. He has taught introductory economics and public policy as an adjunct professor.

At age 34, Jun enjoys traveling and reading. He grew up and resides in Edison, New Jersey.
