| Info | ELLSWORTH, William Wolcott, (son of Oliver Ellsworth), a Representative from Connecticut; born in Windsor, Conn., November 10, 1791; completed preparatory studies, and was graduated from Yale College in 1810; studied law in Litchfield, Conn.; was admitted to the bar in 1813 and practiced; appointed professor of law at Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., in 1827, which position he held until his death; elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-first, Twenty-second, and Twenty-third Congresses and served from March 4, 1829, to July 8, 1834, when he resigned; Governor of Connecticut 1838-1842; judge of the State supreme court from 1847 to 1861, when, by the constitutional provision relative to age, he was retired; twice declined to accept the nomination to the United States Senate; retired from public life; died in Hartford, Conn., January 15, 1868; interment in the Old North Cemetery.
