Info Pat Kernighan is currently Chief of Staff to outgoing District 2 Councilmember Danny Wan, who has endorsed her candidacy to ensure experienced, independent leadership for District 2 and the City of Oakland. She previously served as a Policy Aide to then-Councilmember John Russo, on the PTA Executive Board of Crocker Highlands Elementary School for eight years, and as the Vice-Chair of the Oakland Library Commission.

For the past six years, Pat has worked full-time to improve neighborhoods in every part of District--Bella Vista, Chinatown, Crocker Highlands, Eastlake, Grandlake, Haddon Hill, Rose Garden, and the San Antonio. She has worked hand-in-hand with residents to increase communication with the police, fight blight and nuisance and improve our neighborhood parks.

“Strong, active neighborhood-based organizations must continue to partner with our policy-makers to fight for the quality of life that our families and children expect and deserve,” says Pat.

Her passion and commitment for parks, children’s issues, and neighborhood improvement are evidenced in Pat’s leadership and legislative work that resulted in the completion of the Eastlake Streetscape project, the new soccer field and renovations of San Antonio Park, and the creation of Splashpad Park. Through her direct efforts, Clinton Park and Lincoln Square Recreation area are in the planning stages for renovations. She played a major role in the writing and passage of Measure DD, and thanks to her leadership, the Lake Merritt projects will begin on time and within budget.

Pat is committed to helping local businesses thrive, especially in our neighborhood commercial corridors, and to attracting more private investment in Oakland. “We need to encourage private investment in Oakland in order to attract jobs, businesses and to support our local tax base,” says Kernighan.

Kernighan will continue to foster the strong relationships that Danny Wan built with the Asian and the gay and lesbian communities. She will advocate for the civil rights all residents of Oakland, including the LGBT community and will continue to lead the effort to provide equal access to City services to our non-English-speaking residents.

“I’m grateful to be endorsed by Councilmember Wan and to have the support of District 2 neighborhood association leaders who I’ve worked with for years. Together we will work to re-vitalize our neighborhoods, improve our parks and recreation programs, and support our local economy.”

Pat Kernighan is a 22-year Oakland resident and is married to Paul Gordon. She is a graduate of the University of Washington, received her J.D. at Hastings College of the Law and is a member of the California State Bar.
