| Info | BENNET, Augustus Witschief, (son of William Stiles Bennet), a Representative from New York; born in New York City October 7, 1897; attended the public schools of New York City and Washington, D.C., and was graduated from Amherst (Mass.) College in 1918; during the First World War served in the United States Naval Reserve Flying Corps with the rating of chief quartermaster from June 8, 1918, to January 19, 1919; was graduated from the Columbia University Law School at New York City in 1921; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Newburgh, N.Y.; United States referee in bankruptcy 1923-1944; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-ninth Congress (January 3, 1945-January 3, 1947); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1946; resumed the practice of law; resided in Laguna Hills, Calif. until his death in Concord, Mass. on June 5, 1983; cremated; ashes interred at Cedar Hills Mausoleum, Newburgh, N.Y.
