Info | born in Daisy, Tattnall (now Evans) County, Ga., July 2, 1878; attended the public schools, Gordon Institute, Barnesville, Ga., and Florida State College at Lake City; was graduated from the law department of the University of Georgia at Athens in 1898; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Reidsville; moved to Savannah in 1900 and continued the practice of law; also interested in agricultural pursuits; served as a sergeant in the Savannah Volunteer Guards, Company B, Coast Artillery, in 1902 and 1903 and as a second lieutenant in the Oglethorpe Light Infantry of the First Georgia Regiment of Infantry in 1903 and 1904; elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1907-March 3, 1917); did not seek reelection in 1916; resumed the practice of law in Savannah, Ga.; president of the Savannah Board of Trade in 1919 and 1920; trustee of the Southern Methodist College, McRae, Ga.; member of the Harbor Commission of Savannah, Ga., 1920-1924; elected to the Sixty-ninth and to the three succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1925, until his death in Atlanta, Ga., July 13, 1931; interment in Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, Ga.
