Info | Tommie Williams, a Republican, was first elected to the State Senate for Georgia’s 19th District in 1998. Sen. Williams represents Appling, Jeff Davis, Long, Montgomery, Toombs, Wayne and Wheeler counties and portions of Liberty and Tattnall counties. Sen. Williams serves as Senate Majority Leader.
Sen. Williams has been a member of the HOPE Scholarship Joint Study Commission, which is responsible for recommendations to the Georgia General Assembly pertaining to the HOPE Scholarship.
Sen. Williams is the founder and owner of Georgia Pine Straw, Inc., in Lyons. He began his working life as a Toombs County onion farmer. He has been a public school teacher, earning his Bachelor degree at the University of Georgia and his Masters in Education at Georgia Southern University. He has also served with the Southern Baptist International Mission Board as a missionary to China, Israel, and Belize. Tommie has served as president of the Toombs County Chamber of Commerce, was named the 1997 Citizen of the Year for Lyons, Georgia, and is a 1997 graduate of Leadership Georgia. He has served on the Board of the Altamaha Bank of Vidalia, was a Board Member of the Toombs County Health Department, and served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Toombs/Montgomery Vidalia Onion Growers Association. He is a deacon at First Baptist Church of Vidalia and is on the Board of Trustees for Brewton Parker College.
Since serving in the Senate, he has received Legislator of the Year Award from the Georgia Christian Coalition (2001), has been awarded a perfect score from the National Federation of Independent Businesses for his voting record supporting small business owners, has received an A Plus endorsement from the NRA, been endorsed by Georgia Right to Life, the Georgia Association of Educators, and the Police Benevolent Association.
He has received the 2003 Annual Legislative Award from the Governor’s Council on Development Disabilities for his work with the “Unlock the Waiting Lists!” campaign, which seeks Medicaid waivers to fund home and community-based services for people with disabilities.
