U.S. Representative (C,R-NC) 1868-1869; unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1868.

Resumed the practice of law until elected associate justice of the supreme court of North Carolina in 1872 and served until his death in Salisbury, N.C., November 20, 1873; interment in the Lutheran Cemetery.
