InfoPEELLE, Stanton Judkins, a Representative from Indiana; born near Richmond, Wayne County, Ind., February 11, 1843; attended the common schools and Winchester Seminary; enlisted in Company G, Eighth Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, August 5, 1861 and served until near the close of the war; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced practice in Winchester, Ind.; moved to Indianapolis in 1869; deputy district attorney of Marion County in 1872 and 1873; member of the State house of representatives 1877-1879; elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1881-March 3, 1883); presented credentials as a Member-elect to the Forty-eighth Congress and served from March 4, 1883, to May 22, 1884, when he was succeeded by William E. English, who contested his election; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1892; appointed judge of the United States Court of Claims in 1892 and served until January 1, 1906, when he was advanced to chief justice and served until February 11, 1913, when he resigned; professor of law at George Washington University (D.C.) 1901-1911; member of the board of trustees of Howard University, Washington, D.C., 1906-1925; president of the board of the Washington College of Law 1910-1925; resided in Washington, D.C., until his death there September 4, 1928; interment in Rock Creek Cemetery.
