InfoSenator Figures is serving her second full term in the Senate after being elected on January 28, 1997, to serve the remaining term of her late husband, Senator Michael A. Figures, President Pro Tempore of the Senate. She was born in Mobile, educated in the Mobile County Public School System and received her B.S. degree in Management Science from the University of New Haven. A former member of the Mobile City Council, Senator Figures is a businesswoman and serves as a board member of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Alabama Women�s Commission, and the Advisory Board for the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. She also serves as a member of the Alabama Democratic Executive Committee and the Alabama New South Coalition. The mother of three sons: Akil Michael, Shomari Coleman, and Jelani Anthony. Senator Figures is a Democrat, and a Baptist. She is a past at-large member of the Democratic National Committee, and has been recognized for dedicated community service by several organizations and agencies.
