Info | PECK, Lucius Benedict, a Representative from Vermont; born in Waterbury, Vt., November 17, 1802; pursued classical studies and attended the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., for one year; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Barre, Washington County, Vt., in 1825; member of the State house of representatives in 1831; moved to Montpelier, Vt., in 1832, where he practiced his profession; elected as a Democrat to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1851); chairman, Committee on Manufactures (Thirty-first Congress); did not seek renomination in 1850, having become a gubernatorial candidate; unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Vermont in 1850; resumed the practice of law; United States district attorney for Vermont by appointment of President Pierce 1853-1857; president of the Vermont & Canada Railroad from 1859 until his death in Lowell, Mass., December 28, 1866; interment in Green Mount Cemetery, Montpelier, Vt.
