Info | Mrs. Patricia Dawn Clark Netsch
Former Illinois State Comptroller and Gubernatorial candidate Dawn Clark Netsch passed away of complications from ALS – Lou Gehrig's disease on March 5, 2013. A member of the Illinois Constitutional Convention in 1970, she was an Illinois state senator for 18 years representing the 13th and then the 4th district, Dawn was a law professor at Northwestern University School of Law, she coauthored the definitive text on state and local government.
Born Patricia Dawn Clark in Cincinnati, Ohio, on September 16, 1926, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, renowned architect, Walter A. Netsch, and her brother W. Keith Clark. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Sachiko Clark of Carson City, NV, nephews Andrew D. (Pamela) Kerr of Wilmette, IL, William S. (Tracy) Kerr III of Topanga, CA, Keith DeWitt Clark and Gregory Joseph Clark of Hyattsville, MD, niece Elizabeth N. Kerr of Mt Prospect, IL, and great nephews Andrew D. (Lindsay) Kerr, Jr., of San Francisco, CA, and Mathias S. Kerr of Chicago.
Dawn was a 1948 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Northwestern University and graduated first in her class from Northwestern's School of Law in 1952. She worked on the presidential campaigns of Adlai Stevenson II in the 1950's. Remaining in Washington, D.C., she was in private practice before returning to Illinois when she joined the staff of then Gov. Otto Kerner. She was one of the first female law professors in the country, joining the NU law faculty in 1965.
Active as a member of Judicature, she was a trailblazing supporter of human rights, of women's rights, of civil rights and was active in many local, state and national organizations.
She was a decades long fan of the Chicago White Sox baseball team.
