InfoJoyce Washington, the granddaughter of sharecroppers, is the second of four children born to hard working parents in rural Tennessee. Her mother, a public school teacher and her father, an automobile mechanic, groomed her to live a life of service to community in ways that make differences in the lives of individuals. Deeply religious, her familys faith and Christian convictions encouraged Joyce to fight the odds and inequalities of a segregated school system. She completed college and embarked upon a career to heal shattered American lives and improve the plight of the working class families who had been her neighbors throughout her childhood.

Joyce volunteered in community hospitals as a young candy striper while still in high school and pursued this devotion to serve by earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Evansville in Indiana. Her first assignment as a young nurse in the emergency room of a large community hospital, Grady Memorial in Atlanta, Georgia, helped her harness the compassion and experience necessary to master her most rewarding challenge as a professional caregiver.

During the climactic years of the Vietnam War, Joyce worked on the front line of service for our countrys soldiers as an assistant head nurse in the surgical intensive care unit at Walter Reed Military Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Joyce quickly excelled as a nurse under extreme conditions to become a chief nursing officer before working her way through graduate school and earning a Masters of Public Administration at Indiana State University. Then, at only 27 years of age, she was charged with direct supervision and oversight of 20 long-term care facilities as a director of a tri-state region. It was during these formidable years as a young healthcare executive that Joyce began her crusade to make hospitals and other healthcare institutions more efficient and responsive to the needs of our communities.

In successive positions of leadership at Advocate Healthcare Systems and Michael Reese Hospital, she reformed general operations, streamlined the delivery of services, revamped emergency room systems and admissions processes, restructured the entire culture of outpatient service systems to make them more customer friendly, and supervised the executive staff in the building of the $15 million Woodland Hospital in Metropolitan Chicago. As President and CEO of HCA Riveredge and Chicago Lakeshore Hospitals, Joyce led the opening of an outpatient substance abuse center, added an adolescent treatment unit, and oversaw the facilitys renovation.
