InfoJoe Malone is serving his second four-year term as Treasurer and Receiver-General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. First elected Treasurer in 1990, Joe's creative use of government resources and the approach he takes in delivering government services in an efficient and effective manner earned him a Pathfinder Award in 1996 from the Center for Policy Alternatives in Washington, D.C.

Long active in civic affairs, Joe is dedicated to rebuilding the two-party system in Massachusetts. He was one of the first to bring term limits to statewide notice with his "Eight is Enough" ballot petition drive, and has been named honorary chairman of the new petition drive to get a constitutional term limits amendment on the Massachusetts ballot in the year 2000.

He was also a leader in repealing the notorious legislative pay hike of 1987, and as Treasurer refused to accept a $15,000 pay raise for himself.

In 1988, Joe was the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate against Edward M. Kennedy, in which he won praise for running an unbeat, positive campaign against the incumbent. With an emphasis on honesty and integrity, Joe emerged as an articulate spokesman for a new generation of citizen activists.

Prior to running for the Senate, Joe was executive director of the state Republican Party and an entrepreneur who gained small business experience as the owner of a chain of fitness clubs in the Greater Boston area.

The youngest of seven children from a close-knit family, Joe was born in Newton on November 18, 1954. He grew up in working-class Waltham. His parents, Adele and Charles, both came to this country from Italy as children. When Joe was only 12 years old, his father died suddenly. The circle of family and friends remained tight, however, and from his family Joe drew a deep and abiding sense of duty towards others.

Following his graduation from Waltham High School in 1973, Joe attended Phillips Academy in Andover. In 1978, Joe graduated from Harvard University, where he played on the football team and in his senior year was honored by his teammates with the Henry Lamar Award for outstanding character and dedication to the game.

Seeing the need for increased electoral competition and a renewed public trust in government, Joe went to work on the campaigns of Governor John Volpe, Senator Edward Brooke, Tom Trimarco and Ray Shamie, among others.

As the founding executive director of the Massachusetts Civic Interest Council, a non-profit watchdog organization, Joe was instrumental in uncovering the wanton misuse of public funds.

Today, Joe is considered one of the Commonwealth's brightest hopes for new and dynamic leadership.

Upon election to the Treasurer's Office, Joe quickly earned a reputation as an independent-minded political figure when he dismantled the wasteful State House bank, sent back the taxpayer-leased car used by his predecessor and ended the practice of giving interest-free loans to legislators.

Joe and his wife, Linda (Ploen), live in Waltham with their four children, Joe, Jr., Sam, Carolyn and Charles.
