InfoIvan Lafayette was elected to the New York State Assembly in November 1976. He was born in Monticello, Sullivan County, New York. He attended public schools in Brooklyn and Brooklyn College. He served in the U.S. Army from December, 1952 until December, 1954.

He and his wife, Bertine have made their home in Jackson Heights since 1956. The Lafayettes have three sons -- Jonathan is an Executive Editor of a national magazine and is married to Helen. Son Mark, an attorney is married to Lisa. The Lafayette's youngest son Richard is a Medical Doctor and is married to Christa. The Lafayettes have seven grandchildren - Sara, Michael and Triplets - Gregory, Eric and Marissa, William Tyler and their latest is grandson Ascher Rabin.

Throughout his legislative career, Assemblyman Lafayette is proud to have been a sponsor of hundreds of Assembly bills that are now New York state laws. The ones that are particularly noteworthy are the nationally acclaimed Truth in Testing Law for college applicants as well as his Uninsured Motorist's Law, which creates penalties for driving without insurance. Other accomplishments include the law that requires banking institutions to be responsible as to interest obligations. He is the sponsor of the law that establishes Banking Development Districts to encourage economic growth in certain areas, as well as the Omnibus Racing & Wagering Laws, and the Red Light Camera law. Lafayette also expanded Building Aid to include Pre-K and Kindergarten facilities.

Mr. Lafayette is the author of the Auto-Bumper Quality Label Law, and made possible the NYC Item Pricing Law. He is also a sponsor of the Social Service Law that increases support for the

needy, as well as a law that makes low-cost electricity available to various business and associations. He also made possible the expansion of the Open Meetings Law.

Assemblyman Lafayette is currently involved in innovative concepts to improve education, and provide pre-school training. Through his efforts, three Early Childhood centers are in place in the neighborhood. The first, PS 228 opened September, 2001 and the other two, P.S. 222 and P.S. 28 opened in September 2002.

Mr. Lafayette has also sponsored many new laws that provide co-ops with veteran’s property tax exemptions and removed parking tax obligations to the shareholders in co-ops. Laws expanding SCRIE (Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemptions) are some other ways in which the Assemblyman has shown that he cares about his constituents.

Ivan Lafayette has a long history of involvement in civic and community affairs. He is a founding member and now serves as the Honorary President of the Jackson Heights/Elmhurst Kehillah (Jewish Community Council), he is a member of Post 209 of the Jewish War Veterans and the

American Legion. Assemblyman Lafayette is the former President of the Jackson Heights Community Federation. He’s a former Trustee of the North Queens Homeowner and Civic Association, and was also a Board Member of the Corona Preservation Senior Center and the Community Education Resource Center, Community Development Agency's Area Policy Board 3 and 4 and a member of the Executive Committee of the Health Planning Task Force; Sub-regional B.

Mr. Lafayette served as President of the Jackson Heights Chapter of B'Nai B'rith, of which he is still a member. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Jackson Heights, Queens, is an honorary member of the Father Bellini Society, Queens Council on the Arts, and the Latin American Cultural Center. He also served on the Faculty Advisory Board of LaGuardia Community College Secretarial Science Department.

Mr. Lafayette was the impetus for the formation of the Air Services Committee for LaGuardia and Kennedy Airports under the Queens Office of Economic Development Corporation.

Mr. Lafayette has received numerous awards and citations from groups such as the NYC Coalition of School-based Drug Prevention and Education Programs, twice by the Boy Scouts of America, St. Gabriel's C.Y.O., Italian Charities, Elmcor Youth and Adult Activities, Local 504 Air Transport Workers Union, numerous Block Associations, the Langston Hughes Library, the Jackson Heights/Elmhurst Volunteer Ambulance Corp., North Queens Homeowners and Civic Association, Junction Boulevard Merchants Association, B'nai B'rith, Jewish War Veterans, Father Bellini Society, the Long Island Board of Realtors, Jackson Heights Community Development Corporation, the Astoria Heights Homeowners and Tenants Association, the Rachel Carson, as well as LaGuardia Community College, Kiwanis Club of Woodside, former Lieutenant Governor Alfred Del Bello, former Council Members Peter Vallone, Jr. and Joseph Lisa, former Congressman Thomas Manton, Senator George Onorato, the Woodside Senior Assistance Program, the Catherine Sheridan Senior Center, the Steinway Senior Center and the East Elmhurst/Corona Civic Association, and Elmjack Little League, which he is a former umpire. The Lexington Center for the Deaf gave him with their Award of Merit, and he has been honored three times by the North Queens Civic & Homeowner Association. Mr. Lafayette was honored by the Dominican-American Society of Queens and he received the Morty Manfred Award from PFLAG. The Federation of NY Housing Cooperatives and Condominiums declared him a “Friend of Co-ops and Condos” and Queens Council on the Arts warded him with their “Friend of the Arts” award.

Since 1988 Assemblyman Lafayette has participated in the Adopt-A-Class program and has "adopted" seventh grade classes, at J.H.S 141 Q, and the Joseph Pulitzer, I.S. 145 School in Jackson Heights. Mr. Lafayette has received special awards from these schools, and from the William Cullen Bryant High School for his outstanding commitment towards public education. Mr. Lafayette has also been cited for participating in the Mentorship program with I.S. 227, the Louis Armstrong School. The Assemblyman also participates in the annual “Principal for a Day” program. Mr. Lafayette considers education as one of his highest priorities and is constantly fighting for additional funds for the schools in his district.

Ivan Lafayette is a former District Leader and State Committeeman.

Presently Mr. Lafayette is Deputy Speaker of the NYS Assembly. Prior to this promotion, he served as Speaker Pro-Tempore for five years. Mr. Lafayette also serves as the Dean of the Queens Delegation. From 1997 until 1999 he served as Majority Whip and was Chairman of the NYS Assembly’s Committee on Standing Committees. Prior to those positions he was the

Chairman of the Assembly's Majority Steering Committee. From January 1991 until December

1992, Mr. Lafayette served as Chairman of the Assembly's standing committee on Consumer Affairs and Protection.

From 1985 until December of 1990 he served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Racing and Wagering. Through the Assemblyman's efforts, New York State's Racing & Wagering Industry was enhanced with commensurate growth in State and local revenues. Mr. Lafayette is Chair of the Sub-Committee on Automobile Insurance. Mr. Lafayette is the former Chairperson of the Administrative Regulations Review Commission.

The Assemblyman also serves, as a Senior Member, on the Assembly's Ways & Means Committee, Rules Committee, Steering Committee, Banks Committee, as well as the Insurance and Transportation Committees and the Assembly Intern Program.
