| Info | Maureen O'Connell was the first woman elected to represent the 17th Assembly District in the February 1998, special election. She represents parts of the towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead, Nassau County, New York.
Ms. O'Connell graduated from the Flushing Hospital and Medical Center School of Nursing. As a registered nurse, she designed and implemented the H.O.M.E. pilot program for the home-based management of oncology patients at the North Shore University Hospital where she also co-authored numerous articles regarding hospice care. During that time, Ms. O'Connell also attained a B.S. in Health Care Administration from St. Joseph's College, New York. Soon thereafter, she earned her Juris Doctor from St. John's University School of Law, receiving the American Jurisprudence Award in Insurance Law.
Ms. O'Connell combined her knowledge of law and health administration by practicing in the areas of civil litigation, elder law and health regulatory compliance in what was then the second largest law firm in Nassau County.
Ms. O'Connell is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, the Medical-Legal and Elder Law Committees and the Oncology Nursing Society. She has served the community as a member of the Mercy League of Roslyn and the Willistons, and the American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Detection team. Ms. O'Connell also served as Trustee/Deputy Mayor of the Incorporated Village of East Williston from 1991-1998. In addition, she is also a member of the Advisory Boards of Nassau Community College and Molloy College Schools of Nursing. Maureen O'Connell was elected to the 17th A.D. seat in 1998, capturing 83 percent of the vote.
In the New York State Assembly, Ms. O'Connell is the Ranking Minority Member of the Health Committee and also serves on the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, Election Law and Judiciary Committees. Ms. O'Connell is the only Registered Nurse serving in the state legislature. As such, in 2001, she was appointed to chair the Statewide Minority Task Force on the critical shortage of nurses.
The seventeenth Assembly District encompasses Mineola, Garden City, Williston Park, East Williston, Carle Place, Garden City Park, and parts of New Hyde Park, Uniondale, Albertson, Floral Park, Franklin Square, Westbury, Merrick, and North Merrick.
Assemblywoman O'Connell resides in East Williston with her husband Don, and their son, Donald.
