Info | Meares was prominent in the Red Shirt movement in 1898 in Wilmington and a prominent Democrat in eastern NC until 1908. He was a descendant of US Supreme Court Associate Justice James Iredell.
In 1908, Meares endorsed Taft for President and became a Republican. He supported TR's candidacy in 1912 and joined the NC Progressive Party that year before returning to the Republican Party in 1916.
