| Info | Dave Somers lives with his wife Elaine, and their three dogs and three horses, on a small farm near Monroe.
Dave and Elaine met in 1972 in the Husky Marching Band. Dave was a tuba player and Elaine played the piccolo. It was a match envisioned only by the likes of John Phillip Sousa. Dave went on to be Drum Major of the Band. Dave graduated in 1976 in Fisheries Biology.
One of Dave's very first jobs was constructing the underwater reef at the Edmonds fishing pier. It was an amazing experience, watching fish take up residence in their new homes within hours of the placement of the reef.
Dave then worked for three years for the US Forest Service at the Verlot Ranger Station on the South Fork Stillaguamish outside of Granite Falls. Dave had the incredible task of hiking the full length of all the streams and river in the upper South Fork, some areas now proposed as part of the Wild Sky Wilderness area.
Dave then worked for 18 years for the Tulalip Tribes as a salmon ecologist - working to protect and restore salmon runs in the Puget Sound. He particularly excelled at working with diverse interests to solve problems cooperatively - like the Timber/Fish/Wildlife negotiation, the Sustainable Forestry Roundtable, the Chelan Agreement process, and the development of the Puget Sound Action Plan. In 1990, he was selected to participate in the Agriculture and Forestry Leadership program (AgForestry) Class XI - an honor and privilege for someone from outside the agriculture and forestry communities.
Dave returned to the University of Washington and earned a Masters of Science degree in Forest Ecology in 1996.
Dave was elected to the Snohomish County Council in 1997. He served as Chair of the County Council in 2001. He earned a reputation as an honest, fair and hardworking Councilmember who would vote in the best interests of the citizens, even in the face of fierce opposition from big money special interests.
