InfoAssemblywoman Naomi Rivera proudly represents New York State’s 80th Assembly District which includes the neighborhoods of Van Nest, Morris Park, Pelham Parkway, Pelham Gardens, Pelham Bay, Allerton, Norwood, and Van Cortlandt Village in the Bronx.

In recognition of her work on behalf of the citizens of the State of New York, in 2011 Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver appointed Assemblywoman Rivera a member of the Assembly Leadership, one of only a small fraction of legislators serving in that capacity.

As a government official and a Mom, Naomi Rivera is one of New York State’s leading advocates for children, families, the elderly and the disadvantaged. She has authored new laws that better protect women and children from domestic violence and has introduced landmark legislation on a variety of issues to strengthen New York’s economy, its schools and colleges, and the public health care system.

In response to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity, Assemblywoman Rivera has authored legislation requiring schools to eliminate unhealthy foods from their cafeterias and vending machines, and she hosts events which increase awareness of youth obesity and encourage kids to start exercising.

A proponent of earth-friendly development, Assemblywoman Rivera has been named one of New York’s leading environmental advocates. She has authored laws to eliminate the use of diesel-powered school buses and mass transit buses. Assemblywoman Rivera has also called for New York State to retrofit school buildings with solar and wind energy alternatives and to offer incentives for the purchase and manufacture of alternative fuel vehicles.

A member of the New York State Committee on Health, Assemblywoman Rivera has also been a champion of the healthcare industry, one of the leading employers in her district. She has secured millions of dollars for hospitals and other healthcare facilities and has saved thousands of local jobs from being eliminated.

As Chair of the Subcommittee on Foster Care, Assemblywoman Rivera helps ensure that New York State protects the interests of all its children, including the vulnerable population of children who are living apart from their families. Through legislative proposals and public discussions with experts on foster care, she has worked to create a more secure childhoods and a brighter future for New York’s children in foster care.

One of New York’s most respected leaders in the fight against domestic violence, Naomi Rivera is the author of New York State laws that support women seeking orders of protection and protect the anonymity of victims of domestic violence. Assemblywoman Rivera also initiated “Walk With Me,” awareness-raising marches on college campuses across the state. Prior to taking office, the Assemblywoman launched the borough’s first domestic violence information campaign at the Office of the Bronx Borough President which is still ongoing.

The senior population is important to Assemblywoman Rivera. She supports senior programs at locations throughout her district and has introduced a law to stiffen penalties for identity theft and other crimes of financial exploitation against seniors.

A member of the Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development, Assemblywoman Rivera partners with the nationally-renowned Bronx Council on the Arts to bring diverse, year-round arts experiences to the residents of her district, including outdoor concerts, movies and other activities that encourage quality family time.

Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera is the second Latina ever elected to the New York State Assembly, and the first to hold a leadership position. Recognizing her responsibility as a trailblazer for women in government, she recently hosted a workshop on empowering women to pursue careers in the public sector. She also sits on the Board of Directors of the prestigious Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee which supports women seeking elected office. Assemblywoman Rivera is Chair of the Subcommittee on Foster Care and is a member of the Committees on Children & Families; Education; Health; Tourism, Arts, Parks & Sports Development; and Real Property Taxation.
