InfoSpear Lancaster was born during the Great Depression, in Leonardtown, St. Mary's County.

As he grew older, he helped his family wrestle a living out of their tobacco farm, and attended a one-room schoolhouse in the tiny community of Rock Point. "It had one room, and one teacher, for all the elementary classes", Spear recalls. "There was no electricity, no plumbing, and heat came from a strategically placed wood stove. In the winter, we kids had to help bring in the wood for heat."

Among the other challenges of childhood in that era, Spear remembers surviving a devastating typhoid epidemic in 1939.

From the small school to a larger facility, Spear went on to La Plata High School, over the line in Charles County, where he graduated in 1951, and then to the biggest school of all for a Maryland youngster, the University of Maryland at College Park.

Ever the adventurer, Spear decided to seek his future in the working world, and left the university after two years. He held various jobs until 1957, when he launched what became an extremely successful career in sales and marketing.

One of the most profound moments in Spear's life occurred during this period, when he met and fell in love with a young Florida woman. Doris Grace Butler, nicknamed "Dee", had come to the nation's capital looking for work. Dee and Spear tied the knot in 1956, and are celebrating 45 years of married happiness this year.

Politically, Spear described himself as a "yellow dog Democrat" for many years, but after a brief fling with Republicanism, joined the Libertarian Party in 1996, and has distinguished himself in leadership roles since joining.
