California Governor. Relocating to San Francisco, California, in 1849, he brought a printing press, began publishing the Daily Journal of Commerce, in 1850, which was the first daily newspaper on the west coast. He published several other newspapers including the Daily Evening News, the True Californian and also published books. In addition, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law. He served two terms as the San Francisco County Clerk, served as the Harbor Commissioner, (1870-71), was a member of the California State Senate, (1873-77) and was the 20th Mayor of San Francisco, (1882-86). In 1886 he was elected as a Democrat the 16th Governor of California, serving nine months into his term until his death from a stroke. He was the first Jewish Governor of any U.S. State and to date he is the only Jewish Governor of California.
