InfoPeter Cianchette was born in Waterville, Maine in 1961. He was raised in nearby Pittsfield, the youngest of five children of Ival Bud and Priscilla Cianchette.

Peter attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from Maine Central Institute. When he was just 15, he was washing windows, sweeping shop floors and other odd jobs at the family business, the Cianbro Corporation. Peter spent his summers and school vacations working at Cianbro as his father and his uncles, along with many dedicated employees built the company into one of the most successful construction companies in the country.

After high school, Peter went on to the University of Maine, graduating with a degree in Business Administration and Finance. A few years later, he married Biddeford native Carolyn Twomey. They recently celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary and they have two beautiful children, Evan and Maria.

In 1995, carrying on a family legacy of public service and acting on his own firmly held belief that individuals have a responsibility to give back to their community, Peter decided to run for a seat in the Maine Legislature. He was elected to the House of Representatives, serving the citizens of South Portland and Cape Elizabeth. In Augusta, Peter quickly gained a reputation for his leadership on important issues and his talent for bringing people together to solve problems. During his time in the legislature, Peter saw first hand the need for a governor who will impose financial discipline on the legislature; the money they spend so liberally belongs to Maine people and that with strong leadership they can get the people's business done responsibly. He was re-elected in 1998 by a wide margin.
