InfoHarry B. Hershey was born at Mifflin, Richard County, Ohio on March 8, 1885. He was educated in Taylorville elementary and high schools, received an A.B. Degree from the University of Illinois in 1909 and a J.D. Degree in 1911 from the University of Chicago. He was admitted to the bar in 1911, in 1912 was elected City Attorney of Taylorville, and later was State’s Attorney of Christian County, serving two terms from 1912 to 1920. He also served as Mayor of Taylorville for two terms from 1922 to 1926. Mr. Hershey was democratic candidate for Governor of Illinois in 1940. From 1932 through 1940 he was general counsel for the Bureau of Liquidations, Conservation and Rehabilitation for the Department of Insurance. He was Director of Insurance of the State of Illinois from 1949 to September 1950. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Elks, I.O.O.F., Taylorville Country Club, Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta and Delta Sigma Rho honorary fraternities, Farm Bureau Association of Taylorville, Director and Vice-President of the First Trust & Savings Bank of Taylorville, and a director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association. An LL.D. degree was conferred upon him by the John Marshall College of Law. He died August 30, 1967.
