|Info||Marla Weech is a Florida native who loves working at WFTV-Channel 9! She graduated from the University of Central Florida, and has worked in Jacksonville, Florida, Fort Myers, Florida and Little Rock, Arkansas. But she's spent most of her career at WFTV-Channel Nine... first as general assignment reporter, then as a Weekend Co-Anchor before becoming a weeknight anchor. |
She currently anchors Action News at 10 on WRDQ Action TV 27 (Channel 9's Sister Station).
Recently, her alma mater honored her by inducting her into the Nicholson School of Communication Hall of Fame... and she has served on the Advisory Board for the UCF Comunications Department.
She's received numerous First Place Awards for Investigative Reporting and for Spot News Reporting from United Press International, as well as honors from The Florida Bar Association. And, a video presentation for potential jurors on "Jury Duty," anchored by Marla, was also shown to the Justices of The Florida Supreme Court.
She's also frequently chosen as Orlando's Favorite Anchorwoman by readers of several local magazines and in various county newspaper polls. When she's not working she might be mentoring newsroom interns or giving advice to up-and-coming cub reporters.
She recently organized and helped facilitate a 12-week financial class for young college students. Marla has also been involved in a Literacy Campaign at various libraries, schools and businesses.
Marla loves many different varieties of music and studied both vocal and instrumental classical music. She was preparing to become a music teacher, before discovering her journalistic talents. She still (occasionally) picks up her flute, and bassoon, and enjoys various concerts! But, she's not always in the audience. As you might imagine, she lends her voice, as a narrator, and as a soloist, during special presentations.
Marla loves to work out at the gym, and is a swimmer and a certified scuba diver... enjoying Florida's many pristine springs...a past time that greatly helped her during a joint, State of Florida/Channel 9 television campaign series called "Keep Florida Beautiful." She also hosted numerous WMFE Public Television Service hour-long programs called "Indian River Lagoon: Our Resources At Risk."
Her additional favorite past times include camping, and travel, as well as floral arranging. Her floral talents have been seen at Calvary Assembly Church in Winter Park, and she is a volunteer on the Floral Team at the First Presbyterian Church of Downtown Orlando. The Floral Team is a ministry that provides flowers for shut in's as well as for the Sunday Morning church service. She's also decorated for several weddings for friends and relatives.
And she's been known to whip up things in her kitchen. By far, her most frequently requested concoction, by her newsroom colleagues, is her delicious Peanut Butter Pie!
