| Info | Hakeem Jeffries was born in Brooklyn Hospital, and raised by his parents in Crown Heights along with his younger brother. He is a product of the public school system, graduating from Midwood High School in 1988 and an active member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.
He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the State University of New York, graduating with honors for outstanding academic performance in 1992. Hakeem then attended graduate school at Georgetown University, where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Public Policy in 1994. While at Georgetown University, he also worked in the administration of Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly.
After leaving Georgetown, Hakeem attended law school at New York University, where he was a member of the law review. He graduated magna cum laude from NYU law school in 1997, finishing in the top 10 percent of his class and delivering the commencement speech at graduation. In 1998, he clerked for the Honorable Harold Baer, Jr. in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Thereafter, Hakeem worked as an associate in the litigation department of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, an internationally renowned law firm, where he practiced law between February 1999 and December 2003. Currently, Hakeem serves as litigation counsel at a major media and entertainment company, working on a wide range of issues, including First Amendment and commercial law.
Hakeem remains actively involved in his community, presently serving as a member of the 77th Precinct Community Council. He is a former civil rights/civil liberties instructor at the Crown Heights Youth Collective and continues to provide pro bono legal advice to neighborhood community groups, most recently in support of anti-displacement efforts in Central Brooklyn.
He lives in Prospect Heights with his wife Kennisandra, a social worker, and their sons, Jeremiah, 5, and Joshua, age two.
