InfoRichard Anthony Alarcón

Los Angeles' Richard Alarcón is a champion of working families.

Richard was hand picked for public service by former Mayor Tom Bradley. An experienced school teacher and community activist, Alarcón became Bradley's anti-gang, anti-graffiti and anti-drug spokesperson in 1988. Mayor Bradley then tapped Alarcón to the job which has become the passion of this mayoral candidate's life. Bradley chose Alarcón, a native son of the San Fernando Valley, to be his San Fernando Valley Liaison. The work he did under Bradley for the Valley was the foundation which won Alarcón a come from behind victory to a seat on the LA City Council in District Seven in 1993. An extraordinary elected leadership role ensued.

Alarcón gained solid popularity and invaluable experience as one of LA's most prominent City Council Members. Richard worked to turn the former GM plant into a new and vibrant center of commerce. He went to work increasing police services in the valley. As a councilman Richard Alarcón donated his pay raise to increase police services. He proposed Anti-Gang programs and supported injunctions against gang members. He brought needed transit funds to his Valley district. He got tough on dead-beat dads. Then, Alarcón masterfully staged another underdog victory to become State Senator in the twentieth district! The San Fernando Valley!

Serving his last allowable term on the California Senate, Richard Alarcón, has become one of the state's most prominent leaders. He's proven himself to be a visionary who understands that lifting underserved communities into the middle class through education and opportunity will raise the quality of life for everyone. As Majority Whip of the Senate and Chairman of the powerful Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations, Alarcón is helping to stimulate our economy while fighting poverty. His leadership is recognized in promoting excellence in education, increased public health services and safe communities.

Alarcón is ready to be the next Mayor of Los Angeles. The city where he was born. The city he loves. A city he will work to unify again. Building Middle Class Dreams like the ones which brought his forbearers to LA.
