Ray "Buttercup" Rollinson, of Mexico Beach, is a poet. He is alive with poems. Memories of poems past (and dreams of poems future) jangle in his brain and jabber in his heart, and they fill him so full of happiness and longing for more poems that he cannot ever stop writing them.
"Ape have I gone now for poems," begins a recent Buttercup poem (which is maybe his ten-thousandth). "Truly ape have I gone."
With all due respect to Buttercup's writing talents, what seems most remarkable about these lines is that so few people today agree with them.
Indeed, it's been estimated that only 1 percent of Americans still read and/or write poetry. To put that in perspective, we as a people are now more likely to have inhaled, in our very last breath, some of the air Julius Caesar emitted at the moment he died than we are to have encountered a single poem in our rememberable past.
