August 25 in Memory Chapel of A.L.
Moore and Sons Mortuary with
burial in Double Butte Cemetary,
Tempe.

Mr. Griffen first went to work for
the newspapers in 1914. He began in
the circulation department of the
then Arizona Republican, delivering
newspapers by motorcycle from
Phoenix to Tempe for distribution to
carriers.

Eugene C. Pulliam, publisher of
The Republic and The Gazette, paid
tribute to Griffen by saying. "He
was one of the grandest men of the
Republic and Gazette family. He
had been a newspaperman all his
life and he was one of the best.

"I doubt if any newspaperman
with the possible exception of Ben
Avery knew as many people as
Horace did," Pulliam said.

"You just don't fill the shoes of a
man like Horace Griffen," he
added. "Everybody who knew him
loved him and he will certainly be
missed by the entire Republic and
Gazette organization."

Mr. Griffen, the Republican
gubernatorial candidate in 1950,
won a three-way primary and
received 125,000 votes in the general
election against the incumbent Gov.
Ernest W. McFarland. but was
defeated.

Born in Hillsboro. Kansas, Mr.
Griffen was brought to Arizona at
the age of one to settle with
parents on a homestead south of
Tempe. His father, one of the first
rural free delivery carriers in the
state, delivered the mail by horse
and buggy between Tempe and
Kyrene for 20 years.

After serving three years with the
Quartermaster Corps during World
War I, Mr. Griffen returned to Mesa,
where he became southside circulation
manager for the newspapers.

When Pulliam bought the
newspapers in 1946, Mr. Griffen
moved to Phoenix and became
circulation manager. In two years,
he was state advertising manager.
Curtis have become full time
members of the Territorial Staff.

During his college days at Arizona
State University, then Tempe
Normal School, he spent two months
in professional baseball with the
Chicago White Sox, then played
semipro ball in Arizona for 14 years.

Mr. Griffen was a former
governor of Rotary International, a
46-year member of Phoenix Rotary,
a three-time president of ASU
Alumni Association, former post
commander of the American Legion
in Tempe, member of the Masonic
I-odge and Mesa Chapter of the
Order of Eastern Star.

He is survived by his wife, Jessie;
a son, Horace B. Griffen Jr. of
Durango, Colo, a daughter. Mrs.
Karl N. Holbeck of Mesa, six
grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.
