InfoAs a freshman legislator, Lois has made headway on the area’s most critical issues, including transportation, education, housing, social services and environmental protection.

Elected to the California State Assembly in 2002, Lois represents the 8th Assembly District, encompassing Solano and Yolo County communities including Benicia, Davis, Dixon, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun City, Vacaville, West Sacramento, Winters and Woodland. In the Assembly, Lois chairs the Human Services Committee and serves on additional committees, including Budget, Health, Natural Resources and The Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee. She serves on the Budget Sub-Committee on Natural Resources, and is the chair of the Equal Access to Preschool Select Committee. She also serves on a number of Assembly Select Committees, including Biotechnology, California Ports, California Water Needs and Climate Change, Children's Physical and Mental Well-Being in Diverse California Communities, Domestic Violence, Future of Farming in California, Rural Economic Development and Wetlands.

In 2003, Lois was a founding member of the Bipartisan Group, which was formed by a group of legislators from both parties to work together to develop bipartisan solutions to state budget and political reform issues.

Previously, Lois served Yolo County as a County Supervisor from 1998 to 2002. In 2000, she was elected Chairperson of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors and also served as Chair of the Yolo County Children and Families Commission (1999-2002) and on the Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District (1994-2002). During her tenure as a Supervisor, she led efforts to establish a multi-disciplinary interview center for abused children, a crisis nursery, and The Yolo County Children’s Alliance. Her work for the environment included the first Tree Plan for Yolo County and Gaining Ground, the first countywide land use task force.

Prior to her election to the Board of Supervisors, she won a seat on the Davis City Council and served two terms as Mayor (1992-1994 and 1996-1998). Some of her achievements as a City Councilmember include the construction of the Sutter Davis Hospital and the University Retirement Community. She also led the effort to create the Economics and Finance Commission and the Open Space Commission. To protect the environment and agricultural land, she led efforts to preserve and restore Putah Creek, create wetlands adjacent to the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Yolo Basin, and worked to pass the Davis Farmland Preservation Ordinance.

Married for 36 years to Bruce Wolk, Professor of Law at UC Davis Law School, Lois has two grown children.

Lois received a B.A. from Antioch College in 1968, and an M.A. from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in 1971.
