Amherst College 1876, Harvard Law School. Reported to have thrown the first curve ball in baseball history while serving on the Amherst College baseball team.
Admitted to the bar 1878 and practiced law in Elmira until 1900. Served as law partner of U.S. Senator David B. Hill. Member of the law firm of Reynolds, Stanchfield, & Collins 1885-1905.

Among his famous cases were: one in which he obtained the release of the man who murdered Stanford White; the defense of the president of Mercantile National Bank, who had misapplied thousands of dollars; the impeachment case of Gov. William Sulzer; and the trial of five Socialist Party members of the State Assembly.
