Admitted to the bar 1878 and practiced law in Elmira until 1900. Served as law partner of U.S. Senator David B. Hill. Member of the law firm of Reynolds, Stanchfield, & Collins 1885-1905.

Head of the law firm Stanchfield & Levy; leading trial lawyer in New York State. Specialized in criminal law, divorce law, corporation and case law. Among his famous cases were: one in which he obtained the release of the man who murdered Stanford White; the defense of the president of Mercantile National Bank, who had misapplied thousands of dollars; the impeachment case of Gov. William Sulzer; and the trial of five Socialist Party members of the State Assembly.
