InfoDr. Ruby Dhalla is the Member of Parliament for the riding of Brampton Springdale. She is a community activist, doctor, entrepreneur, and is now the youngest woman in Canadian Parliament.

Dr. Dhalla brings extraordinary experience, passion, and perspective into her role. Elected as a Member of Parliament in 2004, her years of working in the political grassroots have provided her with significant experience and exposure into the dynamics of the political process in Ottawa. Most importantly her ability to communicate and identify with people from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds entrenches a sense of inclusiveness amongst her constituents.

Dr. Dhalla was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1995 she graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a B.Sc. in Biochemistry, minor in Political Science, and furthered her academic pursuits in Toronto, graduating in 1999 as a Doctor of Chiropractic.

As a Chiropractor and an owner of multidisciplinary health care clinics prior to seeking public office, Dr. Dhalla has witnessed first hand the complexities and the challenges of Canada’s heath system, especially those faced by patients and front-line health care providers. It is this firsthand knowledge and insight that Dr. Dhalla has been able to contribute to her role as a Member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health.

In addition to her role in health care advocacy, Dr Dhalla has also championed an issue important to many new Canadians – foreign credential recognition. Within a year of getting elected, Dr. Dhalla introduced a private member’s motion calling on the government to work in collaboration with all stakeholders to create a separate department for Foreign Credential Recognition. This motion passed in the House of Commons with overwhelming support of her colleagues from across Canada. Dr. Dhalla hopes that this motion will help alleviate the difficulties many new Canadians encounter in getting their professional qualifications recognized and will contribute towards the enhancement of Canada’s economy and future economic prosperity.

In Parliament, as a member of the Women’s Caucus, Dr. Dhalla continues to work tirelessly to promote the participation of women in Canada’s political process and lends a strong voice to issues that matter to women throughout the world. Dr. Dhalla is the founder, organizer and member of numerous organizations and conferences benefiting and empowering women.

As a Canadian woman of South Asian heritage her presence in the House of Commons serves to better represent the truly diverse and multicultural nature of Canada.

Dr. Dhalla is a firm proponent of Canada’s unique role in the global arena and its responsibility in leading humanitarian relief efforts. In January 2005, shortly after the tsunami tragedy in South East Asia, Dr. Dhalla helped to initiate the Canada for Asia national fundraising concert featuring prominent Canadian artists and performers. This national initiative raised over $4 million dollars while bringing together Canadian and international relief agencies. Dr. Dhalla traveled with Prime Minister Martin and other colleagues to South Asia shortly after the tsunami tragedy to witness firsthand the devastation and Canada’s role in the rebuilding process.

Dr. Dhalla is also a firm promoter of increasing Canada’s trade relationships with emerging markets. She was an integral member of the recent trade mission to India with the Honorable Jim Peterson, Minister of International Trade.

In the age of globalization, Dr. Dhalla understands the critical relationship and strategic alliance that Canada, United States, and Mexico share as neighbors and partners. She recently chaired the International Conference on Progressive Governance in Toronto. As Vice-Chair for the Canada-U.S. Parliamentary Group, Dr. Dhalla continues to work with her colleagues to ensure that the voices of Canadians are heard on issues of shared importance.

As one of Canada’s youngest Members of Parliament, Dr. Dhalla recognizes her responsibility in reaching out to young Canadians and the vital importance of encouraging youth participation in the political process. Her youth, energy and passion make her a natural role model for the next generation of Canadians.

Dr. Dhalla strives to provide a strong voice for the people of Brampton Springdale. Her continuous commitment and pledge to her constituents is to embody the principles of accessibility, approachability and responsibility.
