| Info | Patrick was first elected to the House of Commons in the 2006 federal election against the incumbent Liberal cabinet minister. He is playing an active role in the current parliament and serves on two major standing committees. Mr. Brown is sitting as a member of the Standing Committee on Health, as well as a member of the Government Operations Committee. Patrick previously served in 2006 and 2007 on the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights were he helped steer the Conservative justice agenda through committee. He also served during this period as a member of the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities which examined such important issues as labour law legislation, and child care programs . Patrick has long family roots in Barrie and extensive community involvement. His grandparents first moved to Barrie close to sixty years ago.
Patrick previously served as a two term city councilor for the City of Barrie. He was first elected to Council in 2000 and re-elected in 2003 with the largest plurality of any member of council, garnering 72% of the vote. Patrick’s municipal experience included serving as Chair of the City Finance Committee, Barrie Hydro’s Board of Directors, Gryphon Theatre, Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority, Barrie Physician Recruitment Task Force, Barrie’s Public Library, City Development Committee, Youth Services Committee, Safe City Committee, Artificial Ice Rinks Subcommittee, East Bayfield Building Committee, Barrie Community Sports Complex, Performing Arts Committee, Barrie Tourism Bureau and the International Relations Committee. He has also served the City of Barrie as Acting Mayor on 5 occasions.
Prior to being elected municipal councillor, Patrick served under MPP Toni Skarica as a Special Assistant to the Ministry of Finance and the Solicitor General’s Office from 1995 to 2000. He has also served on the Ontario Attorney General’s policy advisory committee from 2001 to 2003. Patrick has served on the national council of the PC Party of Canada from 1998 to 2003, as well as the party’s management committee until 2000. Patrick served more recently as a vice president on the Ontario PC Party executive under both Premier Eves and current Leader John Tory.
Patrick is currently playing a leadership role in the current parliament in international affairs. He is currently chairman of the Canada-India Parliamentary Association that focuses on building relations with one of the world’s fastest growing economies. Additionally, Patrick serves on the executive of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and represented Canada at the 2006 Commonwealth Conference in Abuja, Nigeria. Patrick’s international experience prior to serving in parliament entailed serving on the executive of the International Young Democracy Union for seven years and assisting in democracy building projects hosted by the Westminister Foundation.
After four years in political science at the University of Toronto, Patrick graduated Law School at the University of Windsor. He has also studied extensively in French at l’University de Trois Rivieres. Patrick was one of 10 recipients of the prestigious Magna Scholarship during his second year at Law School. Prior to his election to Parliament, Patrick was an active Barrie lawyer based on Collier Street in the downtown core of Barrie with a general practice.
