Sarah was elected to Brent East in a sensational by-election victory on 18 September 2003, when she took the former Labour stronghold with a swing of 29% from Labour.

Before becoming an MP, Sarah worked for a major cancer care charity, Macmillan Cancer Relief, where she advised on health and social policy.

A scientist by training, she previously worked in science policy both in the public and private sectors, first at the Royal Society advising the UK government on controversial aspects of science, and later at a science policy consultancy, evaluating public policies on science and innovation for Governments across Europe.

Sarah joined the Liberal Democrats while studying at Cambridge in 1993 and has been active at all levels in the Party since, including serving on the Party’s policy and conference committees and numerous policy working groups.

Sarah has been the Party’s Spokesperson on London issues and was previously a Spokesperson for the Party on Health. She continues to take a particular interest in mental health issues in London.

However, Sarah has been very much a constituency MP and has championed issues in Parliament such as education funding, access to GPs, and the housing crisis and is running a very active local campaign to persuade the Labour-run Council to clean up the area.

Brent East is said to be the most ethnically diverse constituency in the country and to communicate better with her constituents Sarah is taking Gujarati and Urdu lessons.

In her spare time (not much of it!), Sarah enjoys catching up with friends and music – she also sings Soprano in the Parliament Choir.
