Info | J. JOSEPH GARRAHY was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1930. He attended the University of Rhode Island and the University of Buffalo. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Garrahy was a Rhode Island state senator from 1963 to 1969. From 1967 to 1968, he served as deputy majority leader of the Senate and as Democratic state chair. He was elected lieutenant governor in 1968 and reelected in 1970, 1972, and 1974. In 1976, he was elected governor and he was reelected in 1978 1980, and 1982. The governor chaired the New England Regional commission and the Coalition of Northeastern Governors.
