John Franklin Swift was a California State Assemblyman from the 8th District(San Francisco)in 1863 and 1873 to 1875, then from the 13th District from 1877 to 1880.

In 1889 he was appointed Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Japan (Ambassador to Japan). He died at his post 10 March 1891, in Tokyo, Japan.

John wrote a novel about the Nevada Silver Mines called "Robert Greathouse" published in 1870 and a book about his travels in Spain and the Middle East called "Going to Jericho" published 1874.
