InfoCarl Baxmeyer has held several significant positions during his career each providing the opportunity to learn and grown as an individual. Carl believes that the experience he has gained will enable him to bring common sense values to the Indiana State Legislature.

Born and raised in New York, Carl graduated from Lynbrook High School in 1971. He graduated with honors from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan earning a bachelors degree in regional planning and environmental science with a minor in political science. Carl then graduated from Colorado State University earning a masters degree in planning and natural resource management while doing graduate work for the U.S. Forest Service.

Carl accepted a position as the planning director for LaPorte County moving to Indiana in 1978. It was while working at the local level of government, starting a shelter for abused women and children in Michigan City, that Carl sought and received the support of then Congressman John Hiler for that project. Following its successful completion, Carl joined the staff of Congressman Hiler, working in the South Bend district office on a variety of public and private sector projects. It was at Congressman Hiler's office that Carl met his wife, Susan.

After leaving the congressional office, Carl was the director of the North-central office for the 1990 U.S. Census. As office director, he and his management staff, with the help of over 1,000 enumerators and office personnel, successfully completed the count being the first office in the nation to finish the process, ahead of schedule and under-budget.

Carl also owned and operated a planning consulting firm in South Bend. That ten year experience taught him what it takes to operate a business, meet payrolls and pay taxesan opportunity to gain seasoning that career politicians, never venturing into the private sector never gain.

Today Carl is employed in planning and business development by Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc. a national architectural/engineering/consulting firm. He works in their Michigan City office where he is opening new markets while working as part of the professional team to successfully complete a variety of projects.

In 1987, Carl had the honor of being the Republican candidate for Mayor of South Bend and in 1992 ran for the U.S. Congress. While those campaigns where unsuccessful, he gained valuable experience and knowledge while meeting many wonderful people. Carl and Susan have remained active in politics since their days with John Hiler. Carl has served as the St. Joseph County Chairman, President of the Clay Township Republican Club and is currently a vice-precinct committeeman. Susan is currently the Second District Chairman and was previously the Third District Vice Chairman. She is a precinct person and active in the IFRW and St. Joseph County Republican Women's organization. Together they have volunteered to work on many campaigns.

Carl and Susan are also involved in their community. Carl coaches basketball and baseball and has served on the board of the Clay Township Junior Baseball and Softball Association. Currently Carl is serving for a second time on the board of their church, St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. He has served on the Board of Junior Achievement while leading classes for JA in South Bend and Michigan City. Susan is active in the St. Anne's Guild while volunteering for the American Red Cross.

Carl and Susan have lived in Clay Township for eleven years where they are raising their sons John, 13 and Mark, 11. Both attend local public schools with John in the seventh grade at Clay Middle School and Mark in the fifth grade at Swanson Elementary School.
