Info | Martin Joseph "Marty" Chávez
Martin Chavez begins his second term as Albuquerque's Mayor determined to get the City's financial house in order, beef-up its commitment to public safety and lay plans for long-term economic development. An Albuquerque native, Chavez began his public career as the founding director of the State Workmen's Compensation Administration. There he won acclaim for reforming the program and bringing to an end out of control costs.
From 1989 to 1993 he represented Albuquerque's west side in the New Mexico State Senate, bringing the area an aggressive and articulate advocate for needed government attention. In 1993 he was elected to his first term as Mayor. After four years, the Montano Bridge had finally been built, community based policing had become a reality and his effort to keep Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque had been successful. Mayor Chavez left office with a public approval rating of 70 percent.
Mayor Chavez holds a law degree from Georgetown University. He relishes the details of how government works and what he can do to make it perform better. The new Mayor is an active and involved leader balancing a hectic public schedule with the needs of his family, wife Margaret and their children, Martinique and Zeke.
