Former minister of Health, ANC (1994 - June 199)
The new minister of health is held in very high regard in public health circles and said to be capable of carrying out her job better than any of her predecessors.
The oldest of eight children, she was born in 1949 and schooled in Natal. She earned a BSc in Zoology and Botany at the University of Zululand and studied medicine at Natal University. At the same time, she was working underground for the ANC and above ground for the South African Students Organisation; she was its deputy president in 1976, the year she fled into exile, she completed her medical studies at the Universty of Bristol.
She worked as a doctor at the Mbabane government hospital in Swaziland, where she met her husband, current ANC national chairperson Jacob Zuma. She returned to the UK in 1985 to complete a diploma in tropical child health from Liverpool University's School of Tropical Medicine, qualifying her for the ANC Regional Health Committee, followed by a job as director of the Health and Refugee Trust, a British NGO. During the Codesa negotiations, she was a member of the Gender Advisory Committee.
She was awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degree in both University of Natal (1995) and University of Bristol (1996)
She serverd as a minister of Health in the former president's cabinet, Dr Nelson R Mandela.
She is currently a minister of Foreign Affairs (since June 1999)
