Info | Joseph F. Malloney was the Socialist Labor Party's nominee for US President in 1900.
Malloney was born on 10/16/1865 in Providence RI. Malloney was the last of a family of nine children. In 1874, at age nine, Malloney went to work in a cotton factory to help support the family's finances. He became an expert machinist, and in 1892 he moved to Massachusetts to work for George R. Pease, a socialist in Lynn MA. The following year, Malloney began a speaking tour in favor of the Socialist Labor Party. He served as president of the Lynn Machinist's Union and attended the union's national convention in 1897.
Malloney began working in Winchester MA in 1900.
In 1900, Malloney was chosen as the third presidential nominee of the Socialist Labor Party. He had just turned 35 and was the youngest presidential nominee of 1900. The party sponsored slates of Presidential Electors in 23 states and doubled the party's national vote from 1896.
In 1902, Malloney moved to Portsmouth NH and continued working as a machinist. He returned to Winchester MA in 1904 and soon thereafter returned to Providence RI upon hearing of the death of his father Hugh Malloney. He fell into drunkenness and found himself in jail, unable to make bail (Albuquerque [NM] Journal, 8/4/1904).
