InfoJames P. Jajuga of Methuen was sworn in as Governor Swift's new Secretary of Public Safety on September 17, 2001, following the resignation of former Secretary of Public Safety Jane Perlov. Secretary Jajuga comes to this new challenge with over 30 years of experience in the public safety field.

From January 1991 to September 2001, Secretary Jajuga represented the Third Essex District in the State Senate. He served as Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Safety for that entire term of office. At the time he left the State Senate, Secretary Jajuga also served as Senate Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Government Regulations, as well as serving as a member of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, the Senate Committee on Steering and Policy, the Senate Committee on Administration, and the Joint Committee on Education, Arts and Humanities. He had also served on the Senate Special Committee on Redistricting.

As a member of the State Senate for almost 11 years, former Senator Jajuga pursued an ambitious legislative agenda that included halting the proliferation of drugs in our communities, reducing crime, increasing aid to education, eliminating welfare abuse and improving the economic stability of the Commonwealth. In addition, former Senator Jajuga made the prevention of domestic violence one of his top priorities in the Senate. He sponsored the anti-stalking law (enacted in 1992) and the law requiring that the police confiscate firearms from those under a domestic violence restraining order.

Prior to his election to the State Senate in 1990, Secretary Jajuga served with the Massachusetts State Police for twenty-one years. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant and headed the Essex County Drug Task Force. During his tenure with the State Police, he was elected to serve as President of the New England Narcotics Enforcement Officers Association, and served as its President from 1985-87. He was also awarded the prestigious George Hanna Medal of Honor in 1985 for his heroic action and disregard for his own safety when he single-handedly disarmed and arrested a dangerous gunman in Haverhill.

Secretary Jajuga, age 53, was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts and currently resides in Methuen. He is married to Paula (Pagliuso) Jajuga and has two children: Jimmy, age 23 and Matthew, age 19. He received his Bachelor's of Science Degree from Northeastern University and is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
