InfoVINTON, Samuel Finley, a Representative from Ohio; born in South Hadley, Mass., September 25, 1792; was graduated from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., in 1814; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1816 and commenced practice in Gallipolis, Ohio; held several local offices; elected to the Eighteenth through Twenty-second Congresses, elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress, and elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1823-March 3, 1837); declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1836; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1843-March 3, 1851); chairman, Committee on Ways and Means (Thirtieth Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1850; unsuccessful candidate for election as Governor of Ohio in 1851; appointed by President Lincoln in 1862 to appraise the slaves emancipated in the District of Columbia; died in Washington, D.C., May 11, 1862; interment in Pine Street Cemetery, Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.
